Wi-Fi by QR code: how it works
What is stored inside the code, which phones understand it and how to place a sign people actually scan.
What is inside
A Wi-Fi QR code does not contain a link. It stores the network settings — encryption type, network name and password. The phone camera recognises this format and offers to join the network. No internet is needed to read it: everything happens on the device.
That also means the code cannot be updated remotely. Change the Wi-Fi password and the old sign stops working — print a new one.
Which phones connect
| Device | How to scan | What guests see |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone, iOS 11+ | Built-in camera | “Join network” notification |
| Android 10+ | Camera or Google Lens | A connect button |
| Older Android | Scanner app | Network name and password to copy |
Which encryption to choose
- WPA/WPA2/WPA3 — fits almost every modern router; use it by default.
- WEP — legacy, only for very old hardware.
- No password — for open guest networks; the code still saves people from searching the list.
Create a separate guest network. Then the code on the table never gives access to your till, cameras or office computers.
Where to place the sign
- On tables or the counter — at eye level for a seated guest, at least 3 cm per side.
- At the entrance or checkout — with a “Guest Wi-Fi” caption.
- In hotel rooms — next to the TV or on the welcome card.
