Preparing a QR code for print: the checklist
File format, size, colour, margins and materials — everything to check before the artwork goes to print.
File format
| Format | When to use |
|---|---|
| SVG | Print shop artwork, banners, engraving, vinyl cutting |
| PNG 4096 px | When raster is required, large prints |
| PNG 1024–2048 px | Flyers, business cards, office printing |
| A4 sheet | Stickers and table cards on an office printer |
Size by distance
Simple rule: code side ≈ scanning distance ÷ 10. From 30 cm — 3 cm, from 2 metres — 20 cm. The practical minimum for close-up print is about 2 cm.
Colour and contrast
- Modules clearly darker than the background — dark on light is the safest.
- In CMYK check that a dark RGB colour has not turned grey.
- Light codes on dark backgrounds read on most modern phones, but not on older scanners.
- Metallic inks, foil and holograms glare — print the code in flat ink.
Do not crop the white margin around the code. The camera needs a quiet zone of several modules — the most common print-shop mistake is placing the code tight against a picture or trim line.
