Static or dynamic QR code
The key question before a print run: will the code still work in a year if you stop paying a service?
Static codes
The data — link, contact, Wi-Fi password — is written into the pattern. The code does not depend on the service that created it and works as long as the link or contact inside exists. The content cannot be changed after printing.
Dynamic codes
The pattern stores a short link owned by a service that redirects to your address. You can change the destination and see scan statistics — but only while the service runs and your subscription is paid.
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| Change the link later | no | yes |
| Scan statistics | via your site analytics | in the service dashboard |
| Depends on a service | no | yes |
| Works after cancelling | yes | usually no |
| Cost | free | subscription |
When static is enough
- The link points to a page whose content you control.
- Wi-Fi, vCard, phone and text — data that rarely changes.
- Codes on long-lived materials: signage, engraving, packaging.
- Visits can be counted with UTM tags in your analytics.
Want dynamic flexibility without a subscription? Point a static code at a permanent page on your own site and handle redirects there. You stay in control.
FAQ
Which codes does QR Studio create?
Static only: the data is written into the pattern, so the code never stops working because of a service.
How do I count scans of a static code?
Add a UTM tag to the link — your website analytics will show the visits.
